D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton has proposed a bill to expand AmeriCorps by 500,000 members, aiming to reduce youth unemployment. The “Promoting National Service and Reducing Youth Unemployment Act” would enable young people to earn stipends and education awards while gaining work experience.
The bill also mandates a minimum wage for AmeriCorps members, set at 200% of the federal poverty line, and allows for enhanced community services without additional bureaucracy.
