John Edwards trial, spouse of campaign aide to retake stand

The wife of John Edwards’ former campaign aide, Cheri Young, takes the stand on Monday in a federal court in North Carolina, where she is expected to detail her role in helping her husband, Andrew Young, conceal the one-time Democratic presidential hopeful’s affair with a videographer. Her testimony continues from her stand in court on Friday. Cheri Young’s testimony was followed by five days of testimony from her husband, who is considered the government’s star witness against Edwards. The questions Cheri Young may be asked are: Why did she agree to help her husband hide Edwards 2007 affair with Rielle Hunter? Why did she agree to allow Hunter to hide out from the media at her home? And why did she agree to allow her husband to falsely claim he was the father of the child produced by Edward’s affair with Hunter?

Edwards, the former Democratic Senator and presidential candidate from North Carolina, is accused of using hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign donations to conceal his affair with a campaign videographer, Rielle Hunter, without reporting the money to federal authorities. Edwards is charged with conspiracy, making false statements, and is facing six felony charges, including that he accepted illegal campaign donations. If convicted of all six felony charges and misdemeanor counts, Edwards could face up to 30 years in prison.
