Gingrich tops polls in Iowa

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich topped the fourth straight poll of Iowa Republican caucus goers. Gingrich led with 31 percent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came in second with 17 percent, and 16 percent supported Texas Rep. Ron Paul. Iowa’s caucus, which will kick off the caucus calendar and Republican presidential primary, is four weeks away on January 3. Six in ten voters said they could change their mind over the next four weeks.

Gingrich’s campaign has experienced a resurgence thought not possible by many. In the late spring a number of his top campaign advisers and staffers quit amid controversies and financial difficulties. A number of strong debate performances combined with stumbles from other candidates have solidified his lead. Romney said of the latest poll results, “my expectation is that this is going to be a campaign that’s going to go on for a while and I expect to win it.”
