U.S. uncovers Iranian assassination plot, weighs options

The U.S. says the Iranian government was behind a plot to assassinate a Saudi envoy on U.S. soil. Two individuals are in custody, one of them a member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. They have been charged with plotting to kill Adel Al-Jubeir, the Saudi ambassador to the United States. Their plot was uncovered when a man they were working with who they believed to be an associate of a Mexican drug cartel turned out to be an informant for the Drug Enforcement Agency.

The FBI says that the plot to kill the ambassador could have cost many lives, but that no explosives were actually placed and no one was in any danger because it was uncovered early. Attorney General Eric Holder said the U.S. would hold Iran accountable, calling the plot a “flagrant violation of U.S. and international law.”
