Pro-gun control Democrats are recalled in Colorado

On Tuesday, two of Colorado’s Democratic state lawmakers were voted out of office in the heat of an intense gun control debate. Both of the lawmakers were in favor of the gun laws, and after a great deal of retaliation, they became the victims of the state’s first state-level recall.

State Senate President John Morse was close to finishing his final term in office, but did not receive enough support to keep his position. Senator Angela Giron of Pueblo also lost the battle for her seat 56% to 44%. Republican Bernie Herpin will replace Morse, and Republican George Rivera will replace Giron.

The gun laws in question were put into action in July, and call for widespread background checks for all firearm sales. They laws also put a limit of 15 rounds on firearm ammunition magazines. Many gun control supporters, as well as those opposed to the gun laws, became involved with the election in Colorado because they saw it as a chance to voice their opinions. However, the area has a long history with gun culture, and therefore the majority of citizens there oppose the laws.
