Security chief removed at prison

According to Maryland corrections officials, the chief of security at the North Branch Correctional Institution has been removed and reassigned.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

The chief of security was removed because a correctional officer was not notified of a threat against him by an inmate. The officer ended up being injured in a stabbing. An ongoing investigation revealed many deficiencies in how senior-level staff follow policy.

The department says the failure to notify the officer was inadvertent. The security chief will be reassigned, but will remain in the same department.
