Firefighter recovering from surgery to reattach his arm

A firefighter injured in Wednesday’s early morning Beltway accident is recovering from surgery to reattach the arm he lost in the crash. Lt. Ryan Emmons on the West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Department was riding in a firetruck when it was struck by a tractor trailer–three other firefighters were injured, as well as passengers in an SUV that was also involved. Rescuers and paramedics put Emmons’ arm on ice as he was rushed to MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Their actions helped to save his arm, which was detached from the elbow down, until a team of doctors could perform the complicated surgery.

Right now Emmons’ is recovering and doctors are waiting to see if the procedure was successful.
