In response to the government shutdown the National Institutes of Health is forced to turn away new patients for clinical trials.

The trials conducted at the NIH Clinical Center are geared towards people who have exhausted all other medical options.  The center sees approximately 10,000 new patients a year for experimental therapies, many of which are children or those suffering from a rare disease.

Director of NIH, Francis Collins, asserted that existing patients will not be affected.
