Loudoun County voters are debating whether the length of residency matters for election candidates in District 31. Democrat Russet Perry and Republican Juan Pablo Segura are both campaigning for the senate seat for District 31. Perry has been a resident of Loudoun for almost two decades while Segura purchased a home in Loudoun in October 2022.

In Virginia, candidates must be a resident for a year before an election if they plan to run for office and Segura barely beat the deadline in November. “People move into districts to try to run and buy races; you see things like that happening,” Perry said about her opponent. Segura claims that his move to Loudoun was spurred by his wife’s pregnancy, “We wanted to come back to Virginia, and it was even more reason to find more space to enjoy all the beauty of Virginia and Loudoun County.”
