Next month a trial will be held to determine whether or not a black high school student in Texas can be punished by his school district for refusing to change his hairstyle. Darryl George, 18, has been serving an in-school suspension at Barbers High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas since Aug. 31 as the district says that his locs violate the district dress code for hair length allowed for boys.

George’s family claims that his punishment violates the CROWN Act, which was enacted in Texas in September and prohibits race-based hair discrimination. “I love my hair. It is sacred, and it is my strength,” wrote George in an affidavit. “All I want to do is go to school and be a model student. I am being harassed by school officials and treated like a dog.”
