D.C. family leave proposal could be best in the U.S.

A proposal to expand Washington, D.C.’s paid family leave benefits would make every D.C. worker and resident eligible for up to 16 weeks of paid absence, including events such as bonding with newborns and helping a family member recover from illness and injury. The proposal is planned to be financed by the city’s businesses, and has attracted much backlash. “I think it’s going to hurt business in Washington,” says D.C. Chamber of Commerce President Harry Wingo. “The Chamber supports employees being able to support their families, but this goes too far.”
