Conservative Republican files resolution to strip John Boehner of his position

Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina has filed a resolution to strip the House speaker John Boehner of his position. This move has been called “largely symbolic” because of its slim chances of success. In the resolution, Meadows accused Boehner of weakening the power of Congress, diminishing the voice of the American people, and using his power to punish members for voting according to their conscience instead of his will. Meadows has been accused of passing the resolution to help himself raise money. He has some sympathy from other politicians, such as Rep. Walter Jones, another North Carolina representative. Some GOP lawmakers worry that trying to depose Boehner might hinder Republican efforts to focus voters on the problems with Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.
