Chicago’s 4th of July weekend leaves 7 dead, 40 injured

Despite a 30% increase in the number of police on the streets this weekend, the Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy reported 7 homicides within two nights. One victim was 7-year-old Amari Brown, whose father is a ranking gang member. McCarthy fears the next shooting will be retaliation for the boy’s murder. He says that police are focused on seizing illegal guns in order to cut down on crime. Although the number of violent crimes in Chicago this year is still very high, it is actually lower than last year’s rate.
