Bristol, Virginia-based coal operator Alpha Natural Resources stated on Monday that it plans on closing three underground coal mines in Dickenson County by November. The closing of mines 44, 37, and 25 will affect 96 employees. The company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August, stated that the decision was made due to the supply of coal exceeding demand. Alpha also plans on reducing operations at deep mines 41 and 26.
