Teen arrested in assault of 69-year-old man at Metro station

A 19-year-old youth has been arrested in connection to the assault of Albert Langeberg at the Eastern Market Metro station last month. According to Metro Transit Police, Elijah J. Smith was arrested Monday night. Police had been searching for Smith since the attack on April 24, and had filed a felony assault charge against him. Police say Smith spit on the 69-year-old Langeberg and punched him three times, causing him to collapse near the top of the escalator. The incident was captured on surveillance video. Leading up to the assault, Smith pushed the man as they exited an Orange Line train, and got into a heated altercation on the escalator. Langeberg was then transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Last week, police said Smith could face an enhanced sentence due to the victim’s age.
