Police shooting involving an unarmed man raises questions

Before daybreak on Saturday morning, Jonathan Ferrell, 24, was shot dead by police in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ferrell had been in a severe car accident, and had to break out the back windshield to escape his car. He then ran to the first house he could find, and began pounding on the door. The homeowner called the police, and when the officers arrived, Ferrell was shot repeatedly.

Ferrell’s brother, Willie Ferrell, reported to CNN: “We’re going to file the necessary legal actions to ensure that we get the answers that this family deserves, that America deserves,” the man’s brother, Willie Ferrell, told CNN on Monday. “This was an unwarranted, inhumane shooting.” He also called his brother “the greatest man I ever came in contact with.”

Officer Randall Kerrick was charged with voluntary manslaughter, and was released Sunday on $50,000 bond. “The evidence revealed that Mr. Ferrell did advance on Officer Kerrick and the investigation showed that the subsequent shooting of Mr. Ferrell was excessive,” police said in a statement. “Our investigation has shown that Officer Kerrick did not have a lawful right to discharge his weapon during this encounter.”
