Former Army Sergeant and Afghanistan veteran, Kyle White, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on Tuesday. During a ceremony held at the White House, Kyle became just the seventh service member to receive the award for actions in Afghanistan. In November of 2007, during a dismounted patrol, White’s group, comprised of American and Afghan troops, began to take fire. During the firefight, White was knocked unconscious by a rocket-propelled grenade; once he regained consciousness, he took shrapnel to the face, but continued to fight. He fought through enemy fire, searching the area where his patrol had come into enemy contact, dragging survivors and fallen comrades alike to safety, eventually finding an operable radio that he used to call for fire-support and medical evacuations. Once help finally arrived, White insisted that his fellow wounded Soldiers were removed from the battle zone before himself. “It was never a choice,” he explained to CNN. “I told myself from the beginning that I was going to be killed, you know… just the amount of fire … I’m not gonna make it through this.” White has since separated from the military and works as an investment analyst.
