Eight-time Grammy Award-winning musician Lauryn Hill has been charged with failing to file income tax returns for several years with the Internal Revenue Service. Hill, 37, didn’t file returns or pay taxes for the $1.6 million she earned from 2005 to 2007. According to court documents, most of her income during that period came from recording and film royalties.

The South Orange, N.J. native kicked off her career with Haitian-American hip-hop group, the Fugees, in 1991. She began her solo career in 1998 with the critically acclaimed album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” which featured hits “Doo Wop (that thing)” and “Ex-Factor.” The singer-actress is also famous for her role as Rita Watson in “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.” Hill has largely disappeared from public view to raise her six children, five of whom she had with Rohan Marley, the son of famed reggae singer Bob Marley. She is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate on June 29 and could face a maximum penalty of a year in prison and a $100,000 fine on each of the three charges.
