A U.S. army skydiver who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, Corey Hood, died on Sunday from injuries suffered during a stunt at the Chicago Air & Water Show. He collided with another jumper during a stunt known as a “bomb burst”, in which the parachutists fell with red smoke trailing from their packs and then separated, producing a colorful show. Hood fell unconscious from the collision and had an uncontrolled landing on a rooftop. After the accident he was taken to the Northwestern Memorial hospital, where he subsequently died. According to his Army biography, Hood performed over 200 free fall jumps and 75 military static line jumps during his career. He won many awards, including two Bronze stars, and is remembered as an American hero.
