The Education Department announced that student loan repayments will continue on Oct. 1 whether the government shutdowns or not. Many Americans have expressed that they simply cannot afford to start making loan repayments while battling inflation on basic necessities like groceries and housing.

After an almost four-year-long pause, federal student loans began acquiring interest again on Sept. 1 for millions of borrowers. The median amount of educational debt in 2022 was between $20,000 and $24,000 according to the Federal Reserve. President Biden’s Student Debt Relief Plan to forgive up to $20,000 in loans was struck down by a Supreme Court ruling in June.
