A slaughterhouse located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi that supplies chicken to Chick-fil-A is responsible for the death of Duvan Pérez, 16, who was killed after he was sucked into the equipment in July. “Mar-Jac Poultry is aware of how dangerous the machinery they use can be when safety standards are not in place to prevent serious injury and death,” said Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regional Administrator Kurt Petermeyer. “The company’s inaction has directly led to this terrible tragedy, which has left so many to mourn this child’s preventable death.”

Pérez is the second perrson to die at the Mar-Jac Poultry plant in two years. There is an ongoing investigation to determine how Pérez was hired at 16 years old as the federal government prohibits anyone under 18 from being hired to work in slaughterhouses.
