WHITE HOUSE NEWS – Trump targets cashless bail, seeks a flag burning ban

Ananya Roy, News Writer

President Donald Trump signed executive orders Monday aimed at eliminating cashless bail nationwide and challenging the legality of burning the American flag. The bail order directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to identify federal funds that could be cut from states and cities with such policies, with particular focus on Washington, D.C. The District has long banned cash bonds and allows certain defendants to be released without payment. Recent data from the city showed low re-arrest rates among those on pretrial release.

Trump’s second order pushes for prosecutions of flag desecration and directs federal officials to seek a case that could overturn the Supreme Court’s 1989 decision protecting flag burning under the First Amendment. With a more conservative majority now on the Court, the administration sees an opportunity to revisit the precedent.
