POLITICS NEWS – Controversy deepens over Trump administration’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ migrant “concentration” camps in Florida
Florida’s new immigration detention facility, dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” is facing intense scrutiny after lawmakers toured the site, criticizing it as “disturbing and vile.” Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz condemned the facility’s harsh conditions, calling for its immediate closure. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the center, arguing it meets federal standards for detainee housing.
Constructed rapidly on a former Everglades airstrip, the facility holds detainees, including women, children, and the elderly, in heavy-duty tents amid sweltering heat, humidity, and flood-prone terrain. Critics, including immigrant rights advocates and environmental groups, label the center a politically motivated project designed to exploit migrant suffering. Despite assurances from state officials, reports have emerged of unsanitary conditions, limited legal access, and inadequate medical care, intensifying the debate around the ethical and humanitarian implications of Alligator Alcatraz.
