FBI suspects friendly fire in border guard shooting

The shooting and killing of border guard Nicholas Ivie this week was originally presumed to be the work of a drug cartel or smugglers. However, the FBI has said that it is investigating the possibility of “friendly fire,” or gunfire from other border patrol agents, being responsible for the killing. The agency has been conservative with what details it has released, but has stated “There are strong preliminary indications that the death of…Nicholas J Ivie and the injury to a second agent was the result of an accidental shooting incidnt involving only the agents.” Two suspects in the case were arrested by the Mexican military, but a law enforcement official stated no strong links have been made between the suspects and the case thus far. Ivie is the latest in a string of more than 20 border patrol agents that have been killed in the line of duty since 2002.
