Late Mayor Marion Barry was, until his recent death, a D.C. Council member for Ward 8 for nearly 16 years. His death left a vacancy, which will be filled in an April 28 election. Candidates must collect signatures of 500 Ward 8 residents between December 8 and January 28 on their ballot petitions. Another special election may be set for the same day to fill Muriel Bowser’s Ward 4 council seat when she is inaugurated to the position of mayor after November’s general election. Barry served as an at-large Council member from 1975-1979, was elected from 1993-1995 and then again from 2005 until his death November 23.
