Ashton B. Carter will be President Obama’s nomination for Secretary of Defense, sources say. Carter, a physicist worked for a year as Deputy Defense Secretary at the Pentagon. If approved by the Senate, Carter will replace Chuck Hagel, who recently announced his resignation. Carter holds a degree in theoretical physics from Oxford University and degrees in physics and medieval history from Yale. He joined the Pentagon in 1981 as a civilian program and technical analyst.
