Prince George’s public schools in spending, hiring freeze

Kevin M. Maxwell, chief executive of Prince George’s schools announced a spending freeze Thursday for all schools and departments, as well as a selective hiring freeze. Also, Maxwell presented a $1.84 billion budget proposal for 2016. The proposal included a 2.5 percent increase over current spending, and a request for an 8.5 percent increase from the county. Possible deficits in the near future could reach $40 million in the county’s schools.
