NATIONAL NEWS – Southwest Airlines to introduce assigned seating in January

Ananya Roy, News Writer

Southwest Airlines has officially announced the end of its decades-old open seating policy, setting January 27, 2026, as the start date for assigned seating on all flights. Passengers will be able to select seats, including Extra Legroom, Preferred, and Standard options, at the time of booking through various fare bundles. The airline states that the change is designed to offer more choice and predictability, addressing long-standing passenger feedback. Alongside seat selection, Southwest is introducing a new group-based boarding process that prioritizes premium fare holders, loyalty members, and credit card users in Groups 1 and 2.

The move positions Southwest to better compete with larger carriers like Delta, United, and American Airlines, which generate substantial revenue through tiered seating options. Southwest’s new system allows it to monetize seating arrangements while preserving its low-fare appeal. The airline first revealed plans to phase out open seating last summer, and Monday’s announcement makes it official. Passengers seeking more comfort or early boarding can now pay a premium for their preferences, signaling a major shift in how the airline manages its cabin experience.
