NATIONAL NEWS – Secret Service shot, killed suspect who opened fire at White House checkpoint

Secret Service officers shot and killed a suspect at a White House checkpoint. An unidentified bystander was also shot in the incident, but his wounds were described as non life-threatening. Secret Service Director Sean Curran wrote on social media that the Secret Service hopes the bystander makes a full recovery. The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, from Dundalk, Maryland, according to Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department. Best allegedly pulled a weapon from his bag at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue soon after 6 p.m. EDT and began firing at Secret Service officers, who returned fire. Best was also reportedly arrested in July 2025 for attempting to pass through a different White House checkpoint without authorization. Best was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Trump said Friday that he would be skipping his son, Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding to Bettina Anderson Saturday, in the Bahamas. Trump originally was scheduled to spend his weekend at his Golf Club in New Jersey and return to the White House on Sunday, but he announced on Thursday that he would be returning to the White House on Friday instead. This is the third shooting near the president in the past month.
