WASHINGTON, D.C. NEWS – Washington, D.C. sues to block Trump’s takeover of metropolitan police, calls move “Gravest Threat to Home Rule”

Washington, D.C., has filed an emergency lawsuit to stop President Donald Trump from installing a federal official as the city’s police chief, a move city leaders say is illegal and would “wreak operational havoc.” The suit, brought by D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb, argues the order undermines public safety and marks the most sweeping federal intrusion into local governance since the Home Rule Act of 1973. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Thursday night that DEA chief Terry Cole would assume police command, rescinding local “sanctuary” policies and requiring federal approval for all orders.
The takeover has sparked a visible surge of federal presence across the capital, with National Guard troops, DEA agents, and other federal forces stationed at landmarks, transit hubs, and nightlife areas. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Pamela Smith say the order exceeds Trump’s authority, which, under the law, allows federal control for only 30 days without congressional approval. The White House has not commented on the lawsuit, while Trump signals he may seek to extend federal control, framing it as part of his tough-on-crime agenda.
