Senator Cruz is determined to sway Senate about Obamacare
Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz has been testifying in Senate, defending his plan to block any funding for Obamacare. “I intend to speak in support of defunding Obamacare until I am no longer able to stand,” he said. “All across this country Americans are suffering because of Obamacare. Obamacare isn’t working.”
The plan only furthers tension within the GOP and in Senate about how to prevent a government shutdown, while also defunding Obamacare. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell even rejected one of Cruz’s more confrontational strategies. Other Senate Republicans are growing weary of Cruz because he did not want the chamber to take up the government funding bill that the House of Representatives passed last week. Cruz argues against that he does not want Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Democrats to reinstate Obamacare funding through an amendment.
There is a strong possibility that Reid will in fact do that, and will leave no time for House Republicans to avoid either passing the bill or creating the government shutdown.
Either way, many Democrats and Republicans alike think that Cruz is wasting his time by trying to stop Obamacare in the Democrat-controlled Senate.
McConnell gave his opinion on the issue, saying, “I don’t think that filibustering a bill that defunds Obamacare is the best route to defunding Obamacare. All it does is shut down the government and keep Obamacare funded, and none of us want that.”
Republicans have “a rare opportunity to defund this law with a simple majority,” McConnell added. “We should have that vote.”
