President Obama discusses Snowden and the future of intelligence gathering
President Obama discussed reforming U.S. intelligence gathering processes on Friday after National Agency contractor Edward Snowden leaked intelligence information, causing Americans to question the process. “Given the history of abuse by governments, it’s right to ask questions about surveillance, particularly as technology is reshaping every aspect of our lives,” Obama said.
Obama assured Americans there are safeguards in place to protect Americans but Congress will improve the telephone data program. Congress will also improve their transparency to allow the public to know as much information as possible. “There’s no doubt Mr. Snowden’s leaks triggered a much more rapid and passionate response than if I had simply appointed this review board,” the president said.
