Pope says the Church should not “interfere” with gays

Back in July, Pope Francis made comments about not judging homosexuals, and received a huge response. Now the Pope is echoing his belief, but going further in saying that the Church cannot “interfere spiritually” in the lives of gays and lesbians. He said that the Church can voice its opinion on the matter, but that is all.

Lately, Pope Francis has been drawing a great deal of attention to himself and his views in other ways as well. For instance, he said that he encourages women to participate more in the Church, and feels that they need to help make important decisions. The Church has steadfastly defended their position on women and the limited roles they can play in the Church, and while the Pope may not be overstepping the rules, he is bringing forward a new perspective.

Pope Francis has also dismissed those who feel that he needs to be more aggressive with issues like abortion and gay marriage. He emphasizes that the Church needs a “new balance” between spiritual and political goals, and also expressed the desire to change the Church’s “attitude” toward certain issues.

“The church has sometimes locked itself up in small things,” the pope said, “in small-minded rules. The people of God want pastors, not clergy acting like bureaucrats or government officials.”
