Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. John Dan Caine has been confirmed as the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff after the Senate confirmed his nomination last night. Caine was confirmed by a vote of 60-25. The vote took place just after 2:00 AM on Friday just before the Senate adjourned for two weeks. This confirmation came just six weeks after President Trump abruptly fired Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. in his shakeup at the Pentagon. Democrats were concerned that Caine’s confirmation would be too quick, but Republicans pushed Caine’s confirmation through quickly.
Senator Roger Wicker said, “The Chinese Communist Party continues an expansive military buildup, and our adversaries continue to band together against the United States,” in a statement released on Wednesday. He also said, “President Trump should have the expertise of the highest-ranking military officer in place without any delays.” Caine’s confirmation makes him the highest ranking military officer, principal military advisor to the president, secretary of defense, and National Security Council.
