Police evict Wall Street protesters from Zuccotti Park

Police in riot gear moved into Zuccotti Park early Tuesday morning, evicting and arresting hundreds of protesters. The operation began at 1:45 a.m., with the park’s owner saying that the continued occupation posed a health and fire hazard. Evicted protesters marched from Foley Square to City Hall, chanting “We are unstoppable, another world is possible” and “This is what democracy looks like.”

Some protesters moved to the kitchen tent, building a barricade with tables. Some protesters report the area was tear gassed. Other protesters reported the camp’s makeshift library, which contained over five thousand books, was thrown in the trash by officers. Journalists and media were kept a block and a half away during the raid. A sign was posted at the park saying that when the park reopens, a 10 p.m. curfew would be in effect, with tents and sleeping bags prohibited. One protester and 32-year-old Army veteran, Jeremy Baratta, said the movement will continue regardless of their base.
