Norton grateful to Issa for pulling bill

Oversight and Government Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) pulled his bill on District of Columbia hiring practices, following a call from D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown that the city was moving forward with hiring reform legislation. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) called Issa to thank him for his decision to pull the bill. Norton expressed her wish that members of Congress with concerns about D.C. laws to speak directly with its representatives rather than introduce legislation, and she hopes Issa’s decision will serve an example for others.

Issa’s bill was introduced following an extensive investigation into the city’s hiring practices. There was some surprise on Norton’s part that legislation followed the report so quickly. Norton’s stance is that Congress should not legislate for the District, and she is happy an affable solution could be reached.
