Meta announced sweeping changes to its content moderation policies, including the removal of fact-checking services on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Instead, the company will implement “community notes,” a user-generated fact-checking system similar to one used by X (formerly Twitter).
CEO Mark Zuckerberg justified the decision, stating that fact-checkers had been “too politically biased” and had eroded public trust. Critics argue the move appeases conservative voices who have accused Meta of censoring their content.
The decision, made just before Donald Trump’s inauguration, has raised concerns about the spread of misinformation and harmful content on Meta’s platforms. Zuckerberg acknowledged the tradeoff, admitting that the new system could allow harmful content to proliferate.
