The U.S. Supreme Court declined to take up the legal challenge against Montgomery County Public Schools system student gender identity policy. A group of Montgomery County parents previously filed a lawsuit that alleged that the school system’s guide toward addressing gender identity amongst their students violates their 14th Amendment rights as parents. According to the Montgomery County Public Schools guide, the district is leaning into a student-centered approach, “As a school district, we are committed to recognizing and respecting matters of gender identity, making reasonable accommodations in response to student requests, and ensuring the privacy and confidentiality of every student.”

In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education Communications coordinator Christie Scott said, “The Board is pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court declined the challenge to MCPS’ Gender Identity Guidelines. This decision ensures we can continue to provide a safe, welcoming learning environment where all students feel accepted.”
