Georgetown gets historic roads restored

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is taking apart six blocks of P and O streets, between Wisconsin Avenue and 37th Street, in an effort to preserve the historic nature of Georgetown. The construction workers are dismantling the roads, brick-by-brick, and restoring them with the original bricks in the original positions. Dara Ward, point-person for the O and P Streets rehab project said, “The No. 1 priority has been to restore the streets to a grade that’s even. It is going to give the streets better safety, as well as a smoother ride.”

The majority of the $11 million project’s funds are derived from federal highway funding for historic purposes, while DDOT is paying around 20 percent. As of Thursday morning, P Street, between 34th and 35th streets, is now open to traffic. DDOT, who began the project in March 2011, plans to have the remaining streets finished by the end of this summer.
