Fraud Suspected in DC Tax Office

New internal audits and reports from the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue indicate security concerns and embezzling under CFO Natwar Gandhi. Harriet Walters, a former manager for the tax office, was caught stealing $48 million in funds through faulty property tax revenues, prompting an investigation. The Washington Post reported that Gandhi was repeatedly warned about potential security lapses, but inquiries into the case have not been responded to by officials.

The internal affairs inspection was headed by former assistant inspector general William DeVillo who has since resigned but who is expected to testify.
