Davey Johnson named NL Manager of the Year
Davey Johnson transitioned from from his managerial post in the Florida Collegiate Summer League in June to coach of the Washington Nationals in June 2011. From there on out, even in the face of serious health issues and personal tragedy, he led the Nationals to their first winning season since baseball returned to Washington and surpassed their 2011 victory by 18 games for a total of 98 victories. For his rescue of the Nationals, Johnson has won the National League Manager of the Year award presented by the Baseball Writers Association of America. “Individual awards don’t mean a whole lot to me,” Johnson said. “But you like to see players get recognized when they do something good. Guys really didn’t overachieve. They played up to their potential. And there’s still a higher ceiling there for a lot of the players.”
