Bowser to announce members of new Marion Barry commission
On Friday, Mayor Muriel Bowser and other District of Columbia leaders will announce members of a new commission that will work together to brainstorm different ideas and proposals on how to recognize Barry. The former mayor passed away November 2014. The Washington City Paper gave him the nickname “Mayor for Life,” a designation that remained long after Barry left office. He was the most influential and distinguished politician in the 40-year history of District of Columbia home rule. Barry was credited with expanding opportunities for the black middle class and the revitalization of downtown Washington. Friday’s announcement will also include the unveiling of a mural of Barry, created by local artist Jay Coleman.
