In an effort to catch drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses, the Arlington County Board has passed a resolution to install cameras on school buses next year. The Tuesday vote was unanimous, and the legislation will go into effect February 1. This nearly six-month window of time is to allow county officials to develop policies on capture, storage and access to the videos. Suspected violations from the cameras will be passed on to the police, and confirmed instances will result in a $250 citation mailed to the offender. Arlington police estimate nearly 700 citations have been written in the past five years for the offense.
