POLITICS NEWS – Texas Democrats stage walkout to protest GOP redistricting plan, aim to ignite national battle over voting rights

Texas Democrats have staged a walkout, leaving the state to block a quorum in protest of a Republican-backed redistricting plan that would create five new GOP congressional seats ahead of the 2026 midterms. Hunkered down in Illinois and other blue states, lawmakers face fines, arrest warrants, and the threat of losing leadership positions, but say their goal extends beyond Texas, to spark a nationwide fight over partisan gerrymandering.
Framing the effort as a defense of democracy against what they call a “Trump-Abbott power grab,” the Democrats are rallying national allies and encouraging blue states to retaliate with their redistricting maneuvers. While they acknowledge the GOP-drawn map will likely pass, they hope to lay the groundwork for legal challenges and energize voters by spotlighting what they see as an effort to suppress communities of color and tilt the balance of the U.S. House.
