President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his administration is “testing” a plan to take over the governance of Washington, D.C., claiming the federal government has the power to run the capital “if we have to.” 

Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Trump cited crime concerns and suggested his team is working with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on the idea, though she has not publicly responded. These comments mark the first time Trump has confirmed active planning, sparking debate over federal control of a city that has elected its own officials since 1973.
