Mark Carney will be the next prime minister of Canada. The governing Liberal Party elected him as its leader Sunday in a crucial time as the country faces pressure and threatening behavior from the U.S., Trump’s trade war, and the threat of annexation. Craney, former central banker, will replace the current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who announced that he would be resigning in January. However, Trudea will remain Prime Minister in the coming days until Carney is sworn in.
Carney’s landslide win saw him garner 85.8% of the vote. When talking about the economy, Carney said, “There is someone who is trying to weaken our economy.” He went on to say, “Donald Trump, as we know, has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell and how we make a living. He’s attacking Canadian families, workers, and businesses and we cannot let him succeed and we won’t.” Carnet has also committed to keeping retaliatory tariffs in place until “ The Americans show us respect.” The opposition Conservatives hoped to make teh election more about Trudeau’s shortcomings. Trump’s trade War and his talk about annexing Canada as the 51st state have infuriated Canadians and have boosted nationalism in the country, increasing the Liberal Party’s chances for a parliamentary election which is expected within days or weeks. The Liberal Party is also favored in the election and their places in opinion polls have been improving steadily. This marks a huge win for the Liberal Party and could secure another era of dominance for them in Canadian politics.
