The Smithsonian has named Melissa Chiu, the museum leader for the Asia Society in New York City, as the new director of the Hirshhorn Museum for modern and contemporary art in Washington D.C. Chiu will joins the Smithsonian in September. Richard Koshalek, former director, resigned last year after a dispute with the museum’s board over funding to build an inflatable pavilion at the museum for special events. Officials say Chiu is a prolific fundraiser, securing 80 percent of the Asia Society Museum’s $29 million budget. The Hirshhorn has an $8 million budget and the Smithsonian provides $10 million in operating support.
