Responsibilities for clearing sidewalks
Having its fair share of snow and ice this winter, D.C. sidewalks have become a hazard for many people, especially senior citizens and the disabled. The regulations in the area vary on clearing the walkways in front of private property.
The current law is that homeowners and landlords both are supposed to clear snow and ice within eight hours after a snow or ice storm. The city also asks property owners to clear off curb ramps or bus shelters adjacent to their property. D.C. courts haven’t held any property owners legally responsible for not keeping the front of their properties free of snow and ice.
In some areas in Virginia, residents are not legally obligated to clear public walkways but are encouraged to keep walkers safe. City code in Alexandria, Virginia states that sidewalks, driveways and entrances must be cleared of snow and ice by the property owner, occupant or business operator.
Montgomery County in Maryland, requires residential property owners to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property. Homeowners, renters and business operators in Prince George’s County are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks bordering their properties, as is the same in Anne Arundel County.
