Sunday morning, ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow, seeking asylum from rebels who now hold a strong grip on Damascus. Assad’s flight to Moscow marks the end of 50 years of Assad family rule. Celebratory gunfire rang out through the streets of Damascus as Syrians celebrated the end of Assad’s harsh regime.

President Joe Biden responded to Assad’s flight, stating, “Our approach has shifted the balance of power in the Middle East. Biden credited the U.S. for weakening dictatorial and militaristic regimes in the region. The U.S. views Assad’s departure as a significant step forward for justice and progress in the Middle East.
