WASHINGTON, D.C. NEWS – Confirmation delays lead to 13 vacancies on DC Superior Court

Thirteen out of the 62 judicial positions on the District Superior Court are vacant. The U.S. Senate has to confirm the District’s local judges, which has led to the delay. 

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes, D-DC, introduced a bill in February 2022 that called for eliminating the Senate confirmation requirement in the District. District Superior Court Chief Judge Anita Josey-Herring said, “The fact of the matter is, it’s not sustainable. We don’t have the time to do that extra careful, thoughtful consideration, because of the pace at which we’re moving.” She continued, “I’ve been playing chess with the assignments to make sure we can keep the court up and running. We’re running out of moves.”
